Custom Tubing for OEMs

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the life science, semiconductor and medical device industries often work with volatile chemicals, which can offer a challenge when it comes to creating complex components with miniature segments. Chemicals can corrode and contaminate metal, rendering it useless for a variety of applications. Custom tubing with plastic combined with tube bending is often the answer to that dilemma.

OEMs can benefit from Axenics’ ability to create an unlimited range of precision parts — from weldments to assemblies, in all shapes and sizes — to meet their needs within the required footprint. We’ve been manufacturing plastic (and metal) components for decades, with the ability to create a variety of shapes and angles using an array of plastic piping or custom tubing.

Custom tubing using plastics

We operate with a wide range of plastic types to create custom piping kits and tubing assemblies. One of the more common plastics is polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a thermoplastic material used in various global industries. A benefit is that it is chemical resistant, making it the perfect solution to transport corrosive liquids. PTFE is a boon for chemical manufacturers and those in biomedical industries.

OEMs can also benefit from Axenics’ proprietary technologies used to bend plastic pipe that avoid kinking of pipes and tubes. Kinking can become a major issue if chemicals and other liquid materials get caught in the kinked portion of the plastic tube or pipe. It negatively affects flow, slowing production. Trapped chemicals or liquids can cause major headaches in production, costing not just money but precious time when there are  strict deadlines.

For manufacturers who are worried that any contaminants will enter their liquids or chemicals from the piping itself, Axenics can perform tube bending processes in a Class 100 Clean Room. We receive raw tubing that has been professionally cleaned and bagged by the plastic supplier. This process reduces the number of contaminants on the plastic from the start, reducing what can enter our clean room as we perform the custom tube bending to meet your specifications.

Another benefit for OEMs is the variety of shapes and bends we can produce that can decrease the number of joints and fittings required in your assemblies. This is is another money and time saver, as you eliminate the need to purchase tees, elbows and other joints to redirect the plastic tubing.

Plastic tube bending

Axenics bends plastic tubing using a variety of thermoplastics to create piping kits and tubing assemblies. We do a lot of work with Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a chemical-resistant plastic that is ideal for transporting potentially harmful liquids or gasses. Tube bending for delivery systems is also performed in-house on plastics such as:

  • Polypropylene (PP)
  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
  • Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC)

We only use professionally cleaned and bagged raw tubing. Bending high-purity plastic tubes is a good option for production systems that transport corrosive liquids or volatile chemicals. Savvy manufacturers utilize plastic tubes for high-purity applications knowing there’s a smaller chance of contaminants getting into gas and liquid supplies versus some metal tubing systems. Metal tubes potentially suffer from flaking welds when high-pressure gas and liquids flow through them.

Axenics’ proprietary technique for plastic tube bending allows for a strong system free of kinks that works on plastic tubing from as thick as 2 inches down to 1/16th inch. Through years of experimentation, Axenics’ technicians developed tube bending equipment and techniques with better performance than “standard tube bending.” These techniques and tooling options help achieve tighter tolerances and accomplish more modifications than conventional tooling and procedures typically allow. Custom tooling achieves the exact bend radius, angle and design required in a repeatable bending process. It’s also possible to bend any length of thermoplastic tubing.

Plastic custom tubing kits facilitate the movement of liquids and gasses from one area of a manufacturing system to another in one clean, clear shot. This expedites the transport around components and other obstacles in a production system. End connections for tubing assemblies can simply mate with the connections already installed in an existing production space.

  • Custom tubing holds up well against vibrations when placed into large machinery. Vibration fatigue and failure can be a problem with some moving mechanical systems and equipment.
