Why Use Argon For Ultra High Purity TIG Welding

Tungsten inert gas or TIG welding (sometimes called gas tungsten arc welding) is used in component manufacturing because it results in highly-accurate, repeatable and refined welding. If your final product requires precision, TIG welding may be a great option for you.

At Axenics, our TIG welding experts utilize argon in the process. Argon is the third most-prominent gas in our atmosphere (nitrogen and oxygen being the top two). Argon provides an inert gas shield in some welding practices, including TIG welding.

A shielding gas such as argon is utilized in TIG welding to lower the risk of exposure of the molten weld pool to oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen that can be present in the atmosphere. Those elements can jeopardize a weld, leaving holes in the bead or can cause spattering when the weld is performed.

Why use argon as a shielding gas in welding?

With TIG welding, a lightning bolt-type electrical current is used to fuse metal to metal. Due to its intricate nature of creating tiny, precise welds, TIG welding is one of the most-challenging types of welding to master, partly because of the components involved. Stainless steel and other corrosion-resistant metal alloys are very sensitive to the presence of hydrogen, air, water and oxygen

Those impurities in the atmosphere can combine with a weld puddle causing defects in the weld such as cracks, reduced corrosion resistance, carbide precipitation and brittleness, resulting in a bad weld.

Our expert welders prefer using 99.9999% pure argon when performing TIG welds, as the higher purity rating ensures a superior weld. Argon gas envelops and stabilizes the electrical current of the welder to keep the metals from getting oxidized. It’s an important element in high-purity welding.

A TIG weld using argon is easy to spot as the weldment area has a bright and shiny look to it. This can be beneficial to original equipment manufacturers as a cost savings and time saver. In contrast, using a hybrid of helium and argon gases can result in a duller presentation, meaning some brushing and polishing of the weld area may be required for the final result to be perfect.
